Last night we finally met in person! After organizing via difficult-to-hear skype conference calls and seemingly endless streams of email, we have come together in Cancun to see each other in the flesh. It's incredible to think that from over 11,000 miles away we were able to plan nearly all the details of our efforts in Cancun; the speed at which all of this has been put together--less than one and a half months, certainly would not have been possible fifteen years ago when the internet was just beginning and carbon was just broaching 350ppm.
Already, working together face-to-face has been filled with learning. Last night, we learned that Americans and Chinese work for change in quite different ways. Holly Chang, one of our core team members pointed out that from the China-US workshop they held at COP15 last year, they found that American Youth (at least those at COP15) tend to antagonize both the American and Chinese governments more, seeking change from outside the sytem, while Chinese Youth tend to cooperate with both governments more, seeking change from within.
We also addressed our Chinese core team's concerns over how the colors of our dress for our shared action could be misconstrued; we modified our plan to make it something we could all feel comfortable doing together.
It was an amazing experience and just the beginning of what I feel is sure to be one of the most meaningful and important experiences in my life. I'm extremely happy and excited to be here, very proud of what we are all doing, and looking forward to an amazing two weeks ahead.
