by Cecilia
Hello, everyone! I’m a graduate student of Peking University majoring in environmental economy,my name is Cecilia, Chen Yingao, from COP16 China Youth Delegation. Really honor to share my personal experience here.
English is not my first language and actually, before Cancun, I do not have much experience of closely communicating to American youth and get sth done together. Thus, the past five days seems like a window for me to understand and feel the way that US youth think, act and work and provided me with a total new view of USA.
Caroline and I have been very involved in planning a shared action between US and Chinese youth to demonstrate our shared vision for a clean energy future, and which seems to be a much tougher task than I imagined. At first, I just saw myself as a representative of China Youth Delegation with the responsibility of carring out our missions. The responsibilty of planning the shared action turned out to be much more than I had anticipated. We were composing different messages for our respective governments ---and this led to much confusion. But finally, we found a way to define our ovjectives in terms of our shared values and vision. And when trying to listening others side not holding the original position of our own, I am turning to be more willing to understand the background and culture the USA youth are born with, and be more willing to step backwards a bit to contribute space for mutual ambitions.
And the process also shows me why it so difficult for the negotiators to sit down and get agreements, cause there are a lot of differences in our culture values, political systems and ways people views things. Sometime we cannot understand the difficulties of the other side and begin to blame. Sometimes even if we can individually understand each other through conversations, a negotiator as a representative of the nation, also have to stick to the benefits of his own country. That’s the dilemma.
In conclusion, we are now facing a much more tough and complicated situation in the climate change issues. Unless breaking out our routine of doing things to understand a totally different pattern of how our partners', we cannot bring out new solutions to the problem. It is the high time for us youth to take the initiatives to build a new style of leadship based on shared knowledge to fostered collaboration and encourage mutual ambition. And before that, we have to educate ourselves more though close mutual communications which are far more beyond University courses to get ourselves prepared.
